Using the guidelines and sample below, create a short paper describing a character for the fantasy world explained in the assignment.
If you have ever played a role playing game, you have probably created a character for the game. I want everyone to create a character for a role playing game that is based on the male and female divine archetypes.
The paper should be one page double spaced. Identify the name of your character, indicate what male/female divine archetypes are blended to create the character, and give a long paragraph explaining who the character is, what he or she does, and describing how the various archetypes are blended to form his or her character. You may include a physical description of the character, particularly if that helps in identifying the character’s archetypal roles. You must use the archetypes identified in Leonard & McClure, chapters 3 and 4 (see the attached handout).
The Land of Wytol Mygdhrool (pronounced White all Mig thrul where the t sound in dh is a vocalized t) [anagram of World Mythology]
Ruler: Mai’lliw Relfits, Lord of the Realm (pronounced MAY-loo REL-fits) [My name backwards]
The land is made up of a ruling noble class, a trade class, a farming community, and a variety of wandering individuals and groups, including thieves, minstrels, magicians, adepts, sages, and assorted vagabonds.
Below is an example of what I am looking for in your paper. I have created the character Lord Relfits, indicated what blend of archetypes make up his personality, and included a description of him that shows how these archetypes are manifested in his personality and lifestyle. It should be clear from your description how each archetype you have selected to create your character is manifested in the personality and behavior of your character. Your description should be a minimum of 250/maximum 350 words. You must use at least three archetypes and no more than five. Be careful not to use contradictory types. Remember to double space your paper.
Sample Paper
Character Name: Lord Relfits, Mai’lliw Relfits
Archetypes: Judge, Shaman, Trickster
Lord Relfits leaves the day-to-day rule of the kingdom in the hands of his nobles, who form the ruling class of the society, but maintains constant supervision over the land through the use of various magical implements, including the Book of the Faithful, which records the activities of all his subjects, and through which he judges their lives. He roams the kingdom incognito, hiding his identity behind a variety of disguises, appearing sometimes as an itinerant teacher, sometimes as a magician, sometimes as a technician-tradesman, and other times as a wandering minstrel or vagabond. He can also take on the form of various animals and appears in the dreams of his subjects to warn them of danger or to encourage justice and right living. He befriends and instructs those who live justly and honorably and seeks to reclaim those who forget their place or who engage in wrong-doing. At times he corrects the excesses of the noble class by encouraging minor rebellions, always being careful not to destroy the stability of the land, or through acts of magic that benefit the common people. He also engages in civic projects to improve the quality of life of his subjects, using his various skills with magic, science, and technology. Once each year he heads up a national enclave where he dispenses justice to the citizens of the land. During these times, he may reduce nobles in rank or even remove them from office if they have not performed their duties well. He may also raise to the rank of noble a thief or commoner if he believes that person can perform the duties of the ruling class better than someone in office.
