Four Broad Aims
Analysis: Analysis involves the detailed examination of a subject's elements, parts, and/or structure.
Interpretation / (POV): An interpretation examines the meaning of a subject and the implications that underlie that meaning. Point-of-view examines the underlying assumptions behind a particular perspective and how that perspective influences the meaning and understanding of the subject.
Valuation: Valuation involves the examination of the worth of a subject, its significance, importance, value, or relevance.
Synthesis: Synthesis involves the combination of ideas to form a theory or system of thinking, the process of combining individual elements into a new, more complex whole.
Writing Process
The aim of writing process is to provide procedures for writers to present material in a way that is clear, correct, concise, and complete.
- Prewriting: Search for topic. Seeks to be as comprehensive and detailed as possible
- Drafting: Search for purpose/focus. Seeks for central cohesive thought around which to organize ideas and development
- Revising: Search for excellence. Seeks to develop essay according to academic standards of excellence.
- Clarity:
- in language and usage (style, grammar)
- in structure and organization (modes)
- in presentation (examples/support)
- Accuracy: truthful, honest, correct
- Precision: as precise as needed for the task at hand as defined by purpose
- Breadth: complete, including all necessary and relevant details across a spectrum of material
- Depth:
- interesting
- comprehensive
- satisfying
- Clarity:
