The three fates, Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos, who spin, draw out and cut the thread of Life, represent Death in this tapestry, as they triumph over the fallen body of Chastity. This is the third subject in Petrarch's poem The Triumphs. First, Love triumphs; then Love is overcome by Chastity, Chastity by Death, Death by Fame, Fame by Time and Time by Eternity. In this painting, the three fates are dressed, from left to right, in a black dress, a cream colored dress, and a red dress, all full length and belted at the sash with a long belt. The first figure wears a hood. The third holds a closed umbrella. All three figures are standing on a fourth figure of a woman, lying head to the left. The background is black but heavily ornamented wtih drawings of flowers and plants. In the lower right corner is a rabbit.
