Self-esteem is often rooted in having received acceptance as a child, especially from parents. Trauma, abuse, or just a failure to receive approval can lead to low self-esteem, depression, and unhappiness. Write an MLA documented essay of 600 words that addresses the theme of a son’s need for approval in “As A Human Being” and “Hero.” Looking at each poem individually, how does the speaker react to the failure of those around him to acknowledge his worth? What role does physical abuse play in each poem with regard to the speaker’s self-worth? What role does irony play in each poem?
