Using examples drawn from specific poems, explain how a person should approach a poem when attempting to understand, appreciate, and explain it. Focus on the elements of poetry and figurative language (for example, line breaks, rhyme, metaphor, etc.). You may also discuss the use of critical theories in understanding poems. It is not necessary (nor is it advisable) to discuss all elements of poetry or all critical theories. Simply briefly illustrate the most important or most useful elements and, if you wish, highlight one or two of the theories. Focus on how a person decides what is most useful or helpful when approaching a poem (i.e., what does the reader look for that will suggest ways of "unlocking" the poem). You must illustrate your response by citing specific examples from specific poems. Be sure to properly cite each poem referenced..
