Getting Started

This course is optimally designed for use with Internet Explorer with your computer set to a screen resolution of at least 1024x768. You can change the screen resolution by right clicking on the desktop and choosing properties. For more information, see set screen resolution If you use another browser, or do not change the screen resolution, pages may not display as intended.

If you do not have a wordprocessing program installed, you can download and install Open Office, a suite of programs similar to Microsoft Office. Open Office includes a word processing program, a spreadsheet program, a presentation program, and several other useful programs. Open Office is free.

Key ELearn Terms

Asynchronous Learning Network - an online class in which the students can learn at their own pace and convenience

Browser -- a software program that allows your computer to read html files.  Examples include Internet Explorer, Mozilla, AOL and Netscape Navigator. This course is best viewed using Internet Explorer 7 or above.

Course Content -- located on the red menu bar, this gives students access to the content of the course.

ELearn -- A course management system that delivers course materials and enables class interaction.

Email -- the email system within ELearn where you can read and respond to e-mails from all of your classes. (Sometimes it is easier to use the Classlist to send e-mails).

Menu Bars -- the links located at the top of your course that link to things like

There is a blue menu bar for all of your courses and a red menu bar specific to each course.

Module -- A module is a unit within the Course Content. Some courses organize modules chronologically with one module for each week of the semester. Other courses organize modules topically with a module over a single topic that may be covered over several weeks of the semester.

Post -- In an online discussion, a post is an individual response made by a student to a discussion thread.

Proctoring -- Proctoring involves the oversight of an exam or assignment by a credentialed individual who is responsible to establish the identity of participants and maintain the integrity of the testing environment. Proctoring is now required by the federal government in all online classes and is required by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) for the accreditation of online programs.

Reply -- In an online discussion, a reply is a response by one student to a posting or reply to a posting by another student.

Respondus - A program required for testing to insure the integrity of exams and testing procedures.

Thread -- In an online discussion, a thread is a connected list of discussion postings around a single discussion topic.
